Domaine Michel Arcelain Pommard ‘Clos Beaudier’ 2012
The Arcelain Pommard 'Clos Beaudier' is a tiny production, a single-vineyard cuvee that Michel always sets apart from his other Pommards, almost as if it were a premier cru (and I think he sees it that way!). The greatest fault in the 2010s is that they are so charming so early; they risk being drunk up before they really have a chance to show what all the fuss is about. Translucent ruby, earthy bright, pure and powerful, with elegant notes of orange and spice, and complex length. This is a wine to buy by the case: drink a bottle a year over the next 12 years and watch a real Burgundy unfold.
Domaine Borgeot Santenay ‘Vieilles Vignes’ 2018
Year in, year out, this Borgeot Santenay 'Vieilles Vignes' is one of our favorites. We've been drinking this wine consistently since we first met Pascal Borgeot back in 1989. The first Borgeot wine we tasted was his Santenay VV in the 1985 vintage. It was beautiful even in its youth, and we drank it lustily. Have done ever since. Pascal surprised us a few years back with a secret stash of the 1985, and we re-lived our youth in a glass. This is our image of Pinot Noir from the Cotes de Beaune. It ranks as one of the best deals in Red Burgundy on this site...which explains why it is always among the first to sell out
Domaine Albert Boillot Volnay ‘Les Poisots’ 2017
A single-vineyard Volnay from the heart of the village, this ‘Petits Poisots’ shows great Pinot fruit in its youth. Classic Volnay floral notes tucked into the structure and depth 2013 acidity. This is a wine that is charming now, and which will open progressively over the next 5 years. Buy a case and drink a bottle every 6 months over 6 years and you will see a great Pinot unfold.
Domaine De Suremain Monthelie 1er cru 'Le Clou des Chenes' 2015
Of the two De Suremain Monthelie 1er Cru 2015, this ‘Clou des Chenes’ would be the one to lay down. You immediately sense the structure: the vanilla and black pepper; the tender tannins, integrated but present. And then you get the fruit, frank, foursquare and generous. You can go for the immediate pleasure, but better to wait a few years to get the full show.
