As May gives way to June in Burgundy this year, we already see what the 2025 vintage might be. A clement spring, with lots of summery sun means that everything fruit or flower is in advance. No frost, no hail as yet; a bumper crop is on the vine and just about to flower. Nothing is ever certain, but already there's talk about the potential. And anytime there's the possibility of a great vintage, everyone's attention turns to the grand crus.
So this month, in hopeful anticipation, we take you first, to Gevrey-Chambertin, its world-famous vineyards and its prodigious red wines. Then we'll turn our attention to great white Burgundy, with a look at the 'golden triangle' of Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault.
But even given the rarest most famous grand crus, never forget our mantra: 'drink producers, not labels'. And especially in a great vintage. There are extraordinary wines from the so-called 'lesser appellations', made by great winemakers, rivaling anything made in Burgundy in value for money.
And finally, any talk of great wine stirs the appetite, so let's also talk about some great food, specifically recipes for some of Ellie's unforgettable starters.
But before you read on let me announce some big news (at least we think so!) on staying at Domaine de Cromey this year.
