DOMAIN JEAN FERY SPOTLIGHT CASE
Domaine Jean Fery & Fils is a family-run winery located in the beautiful village of Échevronne between Beaune and Nuits-Saint- Georges. The vineyards span over 34 acres from the north to the south of Burgundy in famous appellations.
The vineyards are farmed organically. They have been certified by ECOCERT since 2011. This requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Jean-Louis takes pleasure in a hands-on operation style, organizing the year-round works on the estate. He is also, it seems, always on the look-out for new vineyards, as the revised list of the domain’s holdings suggests.

Domaine Jean Fery et Fils Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune 2021
In the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, vineyards lie at an average altitude of 300 to 400 meters (100 to 150 meters higher than the Côte vineyards). Good exposition compensates for the influence of altitude. However, it is more exposed to frosts, and grapes ripen later. These young Pinot Noir vines are planted at a density of 3,300 vines per hectare, producing 5,000 bottles a year. The vines are pruned using the Guyot double method with organic farming. The wine is a bright cherry color, with notes of spicy red fruit and fresh red cherry. The palate is fresh, again with red fruit and cherries, and lively crunchy tannins. Drinking well now, with good acidity on the finish.
Domaine Jean Fery Cotes de Nuits Village Clos de Magny 2021
It is as accessible as it is amiable, honest and straightforward in taste. The red, which has the gleaming crimson highlights of the Pinot grape, veers sometimes towards an intense garnet hue or, when young, a bright cherry. Its aromas run a classic spectrum through cherry, gooseberry and blackcurrant to notes of underbrush, mushroom and spices (cinnamon). This is a big-hearted wine, powerful in the mouth, full and meaty, and its tannins (more conspicuously present in the younger wines) are well smoothed-down. Ruby red with fresh fruit cherry and black currant dominant. Spicy, with good structure and fine tannins. An elegant wine drinking way above its appellation.
Domaine Jean Fery Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses' Rouge 2019
Yes, we admit, it can be complicated! There is this Jean Fery RED Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses', but the domain also makes both a red and a white Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru both called 'Les Vergelesses' as well. To make things even more complicated, the Pernand 'Vergelesses' and the two Savigny 'Vergelesses' touch another Pernand premier cru called 'Ile des Vergelesses'! Sorry! We do our best to keep it all simple and clear. In addition to being the most complicated corner of the Savigny valley, it's also the most interesting. The vines are east-facing, low on the iron-rich slopes. This premier cru Vergelesses is charming and veloute, with freshness in the black fruit aromas. This wine is accessible fairly young. We start to enjoy them at about 3 years.

Domaine Jean Fery Pernand-Vergelesses 'Les Combottes' 2022
Pernand 'Les Combottes' lies in a heat trap above and behind the village of Pernand-Vergelesses. In a sense it is the last vineyard in the line leading off of Corton-Charlemagne, which explains why you often see this village appellation bottled as a single vineyard lieu-dit. The Domaine Jean Fery has its roots in Echevronne, just above the village of Pernand-Vergelesses, so this is, in a sense, their signature white. Floral and mineral, uniquely Pernand, there's a freshness and a purity that is fleshy and fruity but well-cut and firm.
Domaine Jean Féry Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune 'La Petite Heulée 2020
Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune " La Petite Heulée " shows a pale yellow robe that glistens with silver. The nose is citric, with ripe white-fleshed pear. The toastiness of the oak comes next. And then a note of struck-match. The mouth is incisive, crystalline, fresh, with notes of ripe citrus, ending with a long generous finish. This Hautes Cotes de Beaune is vinified in French oak barrels with a part in ceramic egg-shaped vats. The maturation continues in these different containers until 12 months. At the end of the maturation, a light lenticular filtration is carried out before bottling.
Domaine Jean Fery Bourgogne ‘Les Montatines’ Blanc 2018
Pure deep fruit, rounded with just enough oak to make your mouth water. Floral and citric, but mouth-filling and long.
