Michel Arcelain Beaune 1er Cru 'Clos des Mouches' 2016
Even though the best-known Beaune 'Clos des Mouches' (from Domaine Drouhin) is a Chardonnay and sits on a pedestal on the world stage, most Clos des Mouches is red. The best known, and arguably the best parcel of vines on the slopes above Beaune, it can be either white or red. So put Michel Arcelain's perfect Pinot vines in a vineyard of this caliber, and you get something special. Michel comes from the old school. He thinks that women like his Clos des Mouches and men like his Pommard. But be real! What he really means is that his Clos des Mouches is elegant, lacy and fine, fresh and floral, with impeccable balanced intensity. And it is! This is an example of meticulous winemaking in a world-class parcel of vines.
Domaine Borgeot Chassagne 1er Cru 'Clos St. Jean' 2018
The Clos St Jean lies toward the northern end of Chassagne-Montrachet, close to St Aubin, and borders a limestone quarry. For years we have insisted that it makes is one of the great red wines of the cote de Beaune, despite the modern trends to re-plant it with Chardonnay. And therein lies a tale. Years ago when the Borgeots wanted to take their production up a notch, they took on a partner and set up a small negociant house. One of the conditions of the deal was that they had to rip up their prized Clos St Jean red and replant it in white...which of course commands a higher price. The brothers were gutted because they knew what a great red parcel the Clos St Jean is. But they did it...and regretted it for years. But once they were really up and running, they got hold of another piece of Clos St Jean planted in Pinot Noir. These guys are true to their heritage and close to the earth. And it shows in everything they do!
Domaine Albert Boillet Pommard 1er Cru 'En Largilliere' 2016
Situated above the ‘Grands Epenots’, ‘En Largilliers’ is a relatively unknown premier cru. It sits between ‘Charmots’ and Pezerolles’, and just below ‘Noizons’, so it has pedigree! As its name implies, it has a high content of clay, meaning that produces deep, tight, earthy wines. Here it is showing juicy, dense blackcurrant fruit, good solid acidity and the linear tightness you would expect in its youth. Rose petals and violets, black pepper and spice. This one is worth your cellar space.
Capitain-Gagnerot Ladoix 1er Cru 'La Micaude' 2018
The Capitain Ladoix 1er Cru 'La Micaude' is a 'monople', meaning they own the entire 4 acres of vines themselves. This is and has been for nearly 30 years, our benchmark Pinot Noir. Roger Capitain used this wine to show us that if you are looking for color in Pinot Noir, you are asking the wrong question. He showed us here that a wine can be delicate and powerful at the same time, And he showed us that pretty little red fruits can age as well (and usually better) than concentrated extracted fruit bombs. Racy and well-structured, 'La Micaude' is at the same time discreet with delicate black berry fruits. It's one of those wine that will surprise you as it ages, growing in elegance and nuance with each passing year.
Domaine De Suremain Monthelie 1er cru 'Le Clou des Chenes' 2015
Of the two De Suremain Monthelie 1er Cru 2015, this ‘Clou des Chenes’ would be the one to lay down. You immediately sense the structure: the vanilla and black pepper; the tender tannins, integrated but present. And then you get the fruit, frank, foursquare and generous. You can go for the immediate pleasure, but better to wait a few years to get the full show.
Domaine Jean Fery Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses' Rouge 2018
Yes, we admit, it can be complicated! There is this red Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses', but the domain also makes both a red Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru ‘Les Vergelesses’ and a white Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru both called 'Les Vergelesses' as well. To make things even more complicated, the Pernand 'Vergelesses' and the two Savigny 'Vergelesses' touch another Pernand premier cru called 'Ile des Vergelesses'! Sorry! We do our best to keep it all simple and clear. In addition to being the most complicated corner of the Savigny valley, it is also the most interesting. This Savigny is deeply colored due to the clay and iron content in the soil. It is elegant and powerful, with dominant black cherry fruit, but also blackcurrant, raspberry and the trademark Burgundy wild undergrowth. Delicate with discreet tannins.
Jean-Jacques Girard Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Peuillets' 2018
One thing is certain, Jean-Jacques Girard knows Savigny les Beaune Every angled hillside, every rivulet, every cut in the rock, where the sun shines and where the dew settles. Me makes several different Savignys and a horizontal tasting in Jean-Jacques' cellars is a master class in the appellation. This Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Peuillets' is supple and lacy, with spicy almost explosive black and red currant fruit. There's an intensity that makes the young fruit charming, but which really shows the structure for aging.
Domaine Jean Marechal Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Eveque 2018
Delicate pinot color, rich fresh strawberry fruit with hints of undergrowth. Fine tannins show a silky texture, and the balanced acidity brings the red fruit notes high on the palate. Elegant finish.
Domaine Mouton Givry 1er Cru 'Clos Jus' 2018
Domaine Mouton's aptly-named 'Clos Jus' ('jus' means 'juice') is the Mouton wine we go to first. Always ripe and juicy, ready to drink relatively early. Minerality is the key here, from a vineyard with different soil make-up to the rest of the appellation. Dark fruit, earth notes, delicate structure fleshed out to fullness. We appreciate the finesse in the winemaking, an unstinting perfectionism that has been communicated across a generation. The self-effacing Moutons would be the last to admit it, but for us their wines are nearly always perfect.
Jean-Claude Rateau Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Bressandes 2016
Jean-Claude has a large parcel in the 1er Cru Les Bressandes on a steep slope facing east with pebbly clay and limestone soils, conducted in biodynamic farming since 1979. The soil is warm and well-drained giving ripe, structured wines. Long, slow fermentation with manual cap-punching followed by 18 months in not-new oak. The aromas are subtle and complex with black fruits, earth, violets and spice. The palate is relatively light, but intense with black cherry, earth and saline minerality. No "fruit bomb" here, but rather a traditional Burgundy, showing off it’s impressive ‘terroir’.
Regnaugot Maranges 1er Cru 'Clos des Loyeres' 2017
This much-awarded wine, from an appellation you have probably never heard of, is the standard-bearer for the Maranges. When we first arrived in Burgundy, neighboring Santenay was considered rustic and undrinkable. All that has changed. And now it’s the turn of Maranges to come into the fold. Producers like the Regnaudots have been making it happen for a decade now. This premier cru ‘Clos des Loyeres’ is black cherry in color and black cherry in flavor, which is considered typical of the vineyard. It’s a gutsy wine, full-bodied, round and balanced. There’s a touch of cocoa on that fruit that is persistent right through to the finish. A classy example of what Maranges can be. You have to try this.
Domaine Pierre Thibert Nuits St Georges 1er Cru 'Rue De Chaux' 2015
As you might expect, this young Nuits-St. Georges Premier Cru is full and earthy with a good tannic structure. The vintage brings good acidity which makes the fruit lively and juicy, like biting into a bunch of grapes. There's a floral undertone, and lots of blackcurrant fruit in there. Young and full of promise.
