Capitain Gagnerot Ladoix 1er Cru 'Les Grechons et Foutrieres' 2019
The Capitain Ladoix 1er Cru Grechons is very much an insider's wine. It's sold almost exclusively in the region (or to those who know Capitain well). Year upon year we have tasted the new Grechons at the same time that we taste the latest Capitain Corton Charlemagne, often standing in the freezing cold when the barrels have been taken outside to cold-precipitate the tartaric acids. The number of times we have mistaken the Grechons for the Charlemagne cannot be just chance! There is a similarity in the minerality, with that Corton Mountain limestone smokiness unlain with honey and white flowers.
Château de Vergisson Saint Veran 2019
Bottled in March 2018, this wine is pure pleasure. Raised in stainless steel tanks, it’s pure, open, fresh, with a noseful of rich, ripe fruit that snaps with mineralty, and a mouthful of freshness that’s like biting into the grape bunch. Charming every-day drinking Burgundy!
Jean-Baptiste Ponsot Rully ‘En Bas de Vauvry’ 2019
Stony-dry minerality, smokiness sublimated by a very elegant and creamy toasted aging. Great finesse and tension, a hallmark of Ponsot whites. All the complexity of the premier crus! Aged 12 months in barrels (one-third new oak) and 3 months of assembly in mass (15% of tank, 20% of new barrels and the rest in barrels of 1 to 4 wines).
Domaine Gilles Bouton Chassagne Montrachet Voillenots Dessus Blanc 2019
The vineyard sits in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, actually the name is an old reference to the ‘Neighborhood’ due to the proximity to the village houses. Complex citrus notes transform into fresh just ripe peach with subtle notes of smoke and spice. This wine feels alive!!
Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Blanc 'Clos de la Carbonade' 2019
This single-vineyard Bourgogne 'Clos de la Carbonade' is wholly owned by the Borgeots. And the wine they make there is the greatest surprise on our list. It's a small parcel, located in the village of Bouzeron, the northernmost village of the Cote Chalonnaise. But don't be fooled by its modest pedigree: the 'Clos de la Carbonade' has something special about it. And year after year we see remarkable wines that far outshine appellations much grander than Bourgogne. The Borgeot's can't explain it...yet. But there is a geological study underway to see what makes this parcel tick.
Julien Cruchandeau Bouzeron 'Massale' 2019
Deep, rich and dense with concentrated confit apple acidity, honey and cinnamon spicy. Great body, opulent and fresh. Classic minerality gives it length and purity. And the complexity...you'd think it's a chablis premier cru!
Marchand-Tawse Bourgogne Blanc 2019
From parcels around Savigny-les Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses and the Hautes Cotes de Nuits, this is a cuvee designed to show Pascal Marchand’s vision of Chardonnay. Floral, with that Corton Mountain minerality, great acidity that makes it mouth-wateringly juicy and open. It’s ready. A lovely image of white from the middle reaches of the Cote d’Or.
Agnes Paquet Auxey-Duresses Blanc 'Patience No 12' 2019
Great acidity remains on these whites, giving the vintage a “brighter” feel than hot vintages prior. Alcohol may be a touch higher, though it is balanced with the structure. Riper fruit, of course, with zippy mineral notes and lingering complexity in the finish.
Domaine Royet Bourgogne Chardonnay 2019
Pale gold color, the nose is all exotic fruits. The palate attack is frank, clean and crisp with a floral bouquet that gives way to a bright acidity and slightly saline finish. Aging potential: 2 to 3 years
Domaine Gilles Bouton Bourgogne Blanc 2019
Beautiful example of how good regional classified wines can be. The caveat is that the producer must be top quality, small production. Complex citrus on the attack, with good concentration, saline minerality merges with some white pepper into the finish.
Domaine Oudin Chablis 1er Cru 'Vaucoupins' 2018
The uppermost right bank premier cru, situated between Fley and Chichée, and the next valley over from the premier cru Mont de Milieu, this Oudin Vaucoupin is ripe and fresh, subtle with a touch of salt. Lively and powerful, yet controlled enough to allow the minerality and purity to sing.
Domaine Gilles Bouton Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru 'Sous le Puits' 2019
The vineyard is located at the top of the hill, overlooked by the woodland of Trézin and Blagny. Fantastic terroir that has a perfect balance of intense ‘stony’ minerality yet richness emerging, especially with some ageing. The winemaker has achieved their aim of expressing this character in the wine, the mineral notes dominate with a complexity of fruit, nuts, spice, great length.
