Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Morgeot' 2014
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Morgeot’ is a big vineyard made up of lots of sub-divisions. Much of it is more apt for Pinot Noir than Chardonnay, but that’s another story. But the parts that are good for Chardonnay are really, really good. And a proper Morgeot like this one from the Borgeots has weight, power and depth. It is dense, intense; verging on spicy with a silky finish. One of the great white Burgundies.
Potinet Ampeau Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Champs Gains' 2015
If you want to see what our palate is like for the great White Burgundy of the 'golden triangle' of Puligny, Chassagne and Meursault, this Puligny 1er Cru 'Champs-Gains' from Potinet-Ampeau is a paradigm. Here the subtlest of all Burgundy white minerality lets the freshness sing. Pure, floral, ripe and refined. But under all is a powerful structure that starts out discreetly, but rises insistently and carries the whole package through the mid-palate on to an impressively long finish. Classic Puligny.
Marchand-Tawse Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses' Blanc 2018
Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru ‘Les Vergelesses’ sits, you guessed it, in the northeast part of Savigny where the valley butts up to the Pernand-Vergelesses premier cru vineyard of the same name. It’s a bit confusing, especially when you add in another premier cru called ‘Ile des Vergelesses which, you guessed it again, sits in the middle of the other two. Steep, south-facing limestone soil with a very chalky make up yields wine of complex minerality and freshness. 25% new oak lets the fruit and flowers sing.
Agnes Paquet Auxey-Duresses Blanc 'Patience No 10' 2017
Agnes uses 350 liter barrels (30% new) for this exceptional Auxey cuvee, which is only made in years that she thinks it propitious. The wine spends 12 months in the wood, then 4 months in steel to sharpen the focus. This is a serious food wine, voluptuous and rich, with deep fruit and great structure. Drinks way above its appellation!
