There has been talk over the past year of the 2018 vintage in Burgundy being one of the greatest of all time. We’ve tasted some marvelous wines, both white and red, and from all of the appellation levels. Purity and concentration would be the key words across the board.

Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Rouge 2018
Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Rouge is one wine that is always in our cellar. In fact, it's our 'house red'! This is one of the paradigms of what we call 'everyday drinking Burgundy'. Classic youthful Burgundy Pinot Noir with blackberries and strawberries and that earthiness that keeps you coming back. It is as we claim: you can drink Burgundy every day. This one should be in your cellar too. Pull it out, guilt free and often!
Domaine Felix Bourgogne Cotes d'Auxerre Rouge 2018
Great Pinot fruit with strawberries and blackcurrant. Spicy and mineral. Great balance between fruit and acidity, alive. Makes you salivate.
Domaine Jean Fery Cote de Nuits Villages 2018
It is as accessible as it is amiable, honest and straightforward in taste. The red, which has the gleaming crimson highlights of the Pinot grape, veers sometimes towards an intense garnet hue or, when young, a bright cherry. Its aromas run a classic spectrum through cherry, gooseberry and blackcurrant to notes of underbrush, mushroom and spices (cinnamon). This is a big-hearted wine, powerful in the mouth, full and meaty, and its tannins (more conspicuously present in the younger wines) are well smoothed-down. Ruby red with fresh fruit cherry and black currant dominant. Spicy, with good structure and fine tannins. An elegant wine drinking way above its appellation.
Domaine Jean Marechal Bourgogne 2018
Assembled from wine from two different parcels of appellation Bourgogne that are situated in the limits of Mercurey, you could call this a ‘little Mercurey’, the terroir and black fruits so resemble the village appellation. Severe pruning limits the yields (45hl/ha) reinforces the deep Pinot character of the fruit.
Marchand-Tawse Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018
From the first whiff you know there is substance here. The nose is so expressive and full of black fruit. There’s great tannic structure, but well integrated. There’s charm. fresh, soft and spicy. And what you find in the nose lingers to a long delicate finish.
Agnes Paquet Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018
Partly raised in steel with a with a small percentage of oak. Good structure, good acidity, clean tannins. But also, ripe blackberry fruit in the bouquet, and fresh fruit in the attack. A beautiful Pinot, a beautiful Bourgogne and a real pleasure.
Jean-Jacques Girard Savigny les Beaune White 2018
Jean-Jacques Girard knows Savigny les Beaune. And while 85% of Savigny is red, there is a lovely strain of minerality that comes out of this valley. and with the village appellation Savigny les Beaune blanc, Jean Jaques shows us what is possible. The nose is like an apple orchard, fresh fruit and apple pie spices in the air. Rich, supple, pure, and then a bite of that pie! This one is ripe, fresh and shows a good deal of complexity.
Domaine Jean Fery Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses' Blanc 2018
Yes, we admit, it can be complicated! There is this WHITE Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses', but the domain also makes both a red Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru and a red Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru ‘Les Vergelesses’ as well. To make things even more complicated, the Pernand 'Vergelesses' and the two Savigny 'Vergelesses' touch another Pernand premier cru called 'Ile des Vergelesses'! Sorry! We do our best to keep it all simple and clear. In addition to being the most complicated corner of the Savigny valley, it is also the most interesting. This Savigny white is an eye-catcher, with a greeny-gold hint. Fresh, elegant fruit notes with spice tones and a hint of honey and flinty smokiness.
Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 'Vieilles Vignes' 2018
The Domaine Borgeot makes one of the purest and most consistent styles in Chassagne-Montrachet today. This village Chassagne comes from 50 year old vines, and it's fat. But by no means flabby. With orange flower richness and dusty minerality and good acidity to hold it all in suspension, this wine (as is often the case with Borgeot wines) drinks way above its appellation. There is a spiciness that almost reminds you of muscat, but the structure says Borgeot.
Chateau de Vergisson Saint Veran 'La Coste Rotie' 2018
In ‘La Cote Rotie’, Saint-Veran gets serious. The vineyard is situated at the base of the Vergisson rock, so there’s no lack of limestone, which brings with it finesse and subtlety in the nose, and a rich, lemony, mouth-watering saline fruit which is carried on.
Julien Cruchandeau Hautes Cotes de Nuits Blanc 2018
Very low yields for the appellation (30hl/ha). Raised in 50% steel tank and 50% wood (with 10% new oak in the mix). Orange flower and honey, rich but fresh and open. Long pleasant floral finish.
Jean Dauvissat Pere et Fils Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaillons’ 2018
This Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaillons’ is remarkable for its limpidity; it catches light and reflects it like a jewel. Vigorous and full, this is a big wine with fat decadent spicy fruit and deep lingering minerality. Balanced and precise from the attack, through the mid-palate to the long finish, this is a very well-made wine.
Note: These wines are sourced from small producers, and so quantities are very limited. If ever we run out of a particular wine, we will substitute a wine of equal or greater value.
