SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER
The saying goes in Burgundy that in September, it's the winemakers who work non-stop; but in October, it's the wine that does the work. And as we enter October, the villages smell of fruit and fermentation. There is literally festivity in the air, heightened all the more but the buzz of a good harvest.
It is an especially rewarding time for us as we watch our own Le Clos vineyard on our doorstep continue to mature and produce such beautiful fruit. Not only did we bring in a great harvest (we offered it 'en primeur' here in our last newsletter) in 2025 but we also saw the bottling of our 2024's. The wines from this monopole vineyard continue to punch above their weight. For the 2024 vintage we have a new label and due to the small quantities from this monopole vineyard we have numbered the labels. Excited about this, we are offering these wines now so read on...
THE LABELS
|
|
Is the offer 'en primeur' or presale? Well you might ask. The 2024's are in the bottle and fantastic too, so it is not really en primeur. But it won't be here in the US until early next year so we suppose it is a presale. Anyway, semantics aside, we have just come from a tasting of these wines and we are so impressed we are offering a limited number of cases at a special price now, especially for those who want to be sure they add this to their cellar!. The wines will show on the website next year at $45 for the rouge and $47 for the blanc so this is a pretty nice offer at about 20% off. Click here.
NOVEMBER IS COMING...
Perhaps the greatest festivity to celebrate a new vintage is the auction of the Hospices de Beaune wines, which takes place every year on the third Sunday of November...November 18th this year. Between now and then, the winemaking team at the Hospices, headed by the remarkable Ludivine Griveau, will make the two-month-old 2025 vintage ready for primetime.
Buying a barrel at the Hospices sale has become part of the culture at burgundywine.com by Elden Selections. This opportunity is available to you because we put together groups of our clients, which we call consortiums. As a group of six, we collectively buy a barrel from which we each get 4 cases and we take care of all the details including selection, bidding and raising the wine details here. This approach has made it is easy for everyone to participate in this great Burgundian tradition and to acquire some of the most prestigious wines on the planet. We also offer a half share here. We've been buying since 2013 and we have bought some magnificent wines over these years. We also try to keep some of these wines from previous auctions on our website. You can find a few bottles available on the burgundywine.com website.
CULTURE
And speaking of burgundywine.com's culture, here's one that goes back even further! In a meeting with Thierry Mortet in Gevrey-Chambertin at the very first edition of the Grands Jours de Bourgogne in 1992, we learned to distinguish between the two distinct Gevrey-Chambertin terroirs, and Thierry has been part of the burgundywine.com family ever since. Avidly biodynamic, he was with us at Cromey when we did the first soil analyses before planting our Le Clos vineyard and so we feel privileged to put the spotlight on Thierry Mortet in our blog post in this addition!
AND FINALLY....FOOD
It is very French and very Burgundian and so much a part of the culture that we just have to share it. We have a blog on it in this issue.

The wine region of Burgundy exudes a timeless charm as though things have always been this way — suspended in a perfect balance between producer, grape vine and terroir — but in fact it is everchanging, and the Domaine Thierry Mortet is a fine example of that. Thierry is one of the Burgundy winemakers we've worked with for years and whose wines we proudly sell.

WHITE BURGUNDY
Domaine de Cromey Bourgogne 'Le Clos' Monopole Blanc 2023
With brilliant clarity and visible density, and a hint of greeny-gold, the first attack is background floral and citrus, a classic chardonnay fruit profile, pure and grassy, slightly saline, with charming reductive smokiness. It’s persistent and subtle at the same time. A fresh charming example of white Burgundy.
Celebrate Chablis Mixed Case
Chablis is located in the northernmost wine-producing region of Burgundy, France. The cool climate is perfect for growing Chardonnay, producing wines that are more crisp, refreshing, and mineral-driven compared to those from warmer regions. The lack of ripeness in the grapes results in a more restrained style with high acidity.
Jean Baptiste Ponsot Rully 1er Cru 'Molesme' Vertical Case
Excellent structure, verging on the side of an acidity that carries the minerality and floral notes uniformly across the length and breadth of the palate. Beautiful marriage between the fat of the wine and the mineral tension. Round, precise and gourmand. Aging 12 months in barrels (25% of new oak barrels) and 3 months of assembly in mass.
RED & WHITE BURGUNDY
Introduction to Burgundy Mixed Case
We believe that the only way you will ever know if you like a wine is to taste it. So here is a way to get to know BurgundyWine.com. We propose a 12 bottle mixed case that represents our Burgundy palate. These are some of our favorites. Great Burgundy, but affordable. So that you can open them just to see if you like them too.
RED BURGUNDY
Domaine de Cromey Beaune 1er Cru Champimonts 2022
A pinot noir from a noble Beaune premier cru vineyard. It's dark ruby in color, with fresh acidity in the attack and bright, spicy fruit, with an overlay of chocolate velour. The finish is long, full of fruit carried by the balance of the acidity.
Marchand-Tawse Volnay 1er Cru 'Les Fremiets' 2020, 2021 and 2022
Rich purple, this 1er cru Fremiets delivers an intensity of ripe deep cherry and dark raspberry fruit. This supple intensity continues through on the palate and there remains a nice acidity to maintain an excellent balance through to a fine clean long finish. |
