Holidays? Maybe not so fast!
It's August in France. That means that everybody (and we mean everybody!) is preparing for their summer holidays. And normally, that includes the winemakers. But this year is different. It looks like the harvest for the 2025 vintage will begin while most folks are still on vacation. So the winemakers are cutting short their beach time and scurrying to make preparations to start picking in the last week of the month.
Cromey Le Clos Vineyard update
And that includes us! The crop in the Cromey Le Clos vineyard is beautiful and bountiful. And expectations are high for a vintage that will rival some of the great Burgundy from years ending in 5....we think of 1985, 1995, 2005, 2015. And now 2025! Don't worry we will write regular updates as this vintage is harvested and develops. Very exciting. But there is more current and exciting news - the 2023 Cromey Le Clos has now arrived and is available here. The wines are fantastic and our tasting reports show wines that punch well above their appellation. But the quantities from our vineyard are small and so we want to offer our enthusiasts and insiders first dibs!
Auxey-Duresses
And this month, we shine a light on the wines of Auxey-Duresses, one of our classic 'lesser-known' appellations. With whites that rhyme with Meursault, and reds that make you think Volnay, Auxey-Duresses in the right hands deserves your closer attention. And there are no surer hands in Auxey than Agnes Paquet. We also feature a blog on Volnay, one of the most beautiful appellations in all the Cote de Beaune.
Cooling off
So it's August and it is hot. So we also bring you some tips on how to keep wine cool on a hot summer day.
Food
And finally, when the grapes are fermenting and the young wine is sleeping quietly after the harvest, the vineyards become a hunting ground for mushrooms. It's a sign of the changing seasons. So let us share some of our favorite mushroom recipes and wine pairing as we come to the cusp of autumn.

With its complex flavors and rich character, Burgundy wine – and especially red Burgundy wines made with the Pinot Noir grape – offers unique food pairing combinations, especially with Burgundy mushroom dishes. The flavors of the humble mushroom, along with undergrowth and animal notes, are one of the hallmarks of the Pinot Noir grape, especially when aged.

Volnay AOC, in the Côte de Beaune, is renowned for its elegant red Burgundies. The name originates from “Volen,” the God of water, and was once called Vollenay. A château built by Hugues IV around 1250 became a favorite retreat for dukes, who prized the area's fresh air and fine wine. Over centuries, Volnay gained fame—Louis XI even owned vineyards here. From the Knights of Malta to French royalty, Volnay’s wines have long been celebrated.

Discover Auxey-Duresses, a lesser-known Burgundy appellation in the Côte de Beaune, pronounced "Aussey Duress." Tucked into a cool side valley, it produces distinctive wines shaped by its climate. Growers here, like those in Chablis, must guard against spring frosts and cool summers—sometimes using heaters or ice-jacket sprays to protect their vines.
