The Wine Harvest in Burgundy
This is such an exciting time of year, filled with anticipation. It’s the first week of September and the grape harvest is underway.

Le Clos
Here at the Domaine de Cromey, our vigneron and vendangeurs (winemaker and his team of harvest workers) are hard at work having started picking beautiful fruit in our Le Clos vineyard on August 29th.  And to mark this significant event at Cromey we are offering a limited number of 'Le Clos' 2025 cases now, both red and white, as a special 'en primeur' offering. Each bottle will be numbered and will be delivered to you in 12 to 15 months. This offer is only available to you, our readers of this issue of our newsletter. Click here for details.

Vendage
From this epicenter, all around us, the hills are alive with ‘vendangeurs’ , bringing in the crop as each vineyard reaches optimum maturity.  And as the wineries run round the clock, pressing and vatting 2025, the air is redolent of fruit and ferment. And celebration!

 Corton
So to celebrate the very promising 2025 vintage, let us take you to the very top of Burgundy, both geographically and qualitatively. The emperor Charlemagne had first dibs back in 800 AD, and he chose the Corton Mountain.  He’s remembered there to this day, with the Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne holding court above a sweeping vista across the vineyards of Burgundy.

Aloxe-Corton
The village on the flank of the hill below is Aloxe-Corton, and we take you there to explore not only the grandest expanse of grand cru vineyards in Burgundy, but also an impressive range of premier cru, both red and white that these hills produce.

Capitain
And one stop that we can’t miss while we’re in the neighborhood is the Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot, our benchmark Burgundy since we started in the wine trade in 1985. The family has been on this hill since 1802, and most of their vineyards are visible from the backdoor of the winery.  Walking in their vines is a masterclass in ‘terroir’, with a dozen different appellations grouped in line of sight along the slopes of the mountain.

 Read a Label
And if ‘a dozen appellations’ sounds daunting, we’ll explain all with a piece on How to Read a Burgundy Label!

Escargots
Finally…and we know you have all been waiting…we can’t tell you about Burgundian cuisine without bringing you the ultimate Slow Food…. escargots! Ellie’s recipes, of course.

The history of wine in Burgundy is almost indistinguishable from that of the royalty and nobility of this ancient land. Take the village of Aloxe-Corton, for example. First mentioned in 696, it has an almost mystical appeal...

In our lives we meet many people, but the ones who tend to live longest in the memory are the exceptional teachers we’re lucky enough to meet. These people introduce us to new ideas, offer unique perspectives, and gift us lessons which last a lifetime. Such was the case when here at BurgundyWine.com we first met Roger Capitain, one of the finest Burgundy winemakers of all.

Wine is a complex and fascinating subject that affects us on many levels, both consciously and subconsciously. It's not just the taste and aroma of the wine that impacts us, but also the visual cues that we receive from the label. When we purchase a bottle of wine, the label is often the first thing that catches our eye. It provides us with information about the wine's origin, grape variety, producer, and other relevant details.
