Domaine Borgeot Cremant de Bourgogne
Don’t call it Champagne. You’ll get us in trouble. But this Borgeot Cremant de Bourgogne is produced in the very same way as those much more expensive wines that we are allowed to call Champagne. A well-made Cremant is a joy. A wine you can pull out for any occasion. And a wine which is made on a more human scale than the millions upon millions of bottles produced by our neighbors to the north. And that’s reason enough to celebrate!

In France, the term Crémant is given to sparkling wines that are made in 'traditional method' (same production method as Champagne), but that aren't made in the Champagne region.
The term 'Traditional method' means that the wine went through its second fermentation (to produce the bubbles) in the bottle in which it is sold. This is not the production method for many other types of sparkling wines A sparkling wine produced this way allows for complexity to emerge.
In France there are eight different regions allowed to produce Crémant, each with their own local grapes. However the sparkling wines produced in Burgundy are considered the best quality and with the region bordering Champagne the grape varieties also converge with both regions using Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. (AOC law also permits the use of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Aligoté and Gamay)
As part of the strategy by Crémant de Bourgogne producers to boost the quality of the appellation, the Eminent and Grand Eminent denomination were introduced in 2013.
They must meet a number of specifications regarding the production of the wine, the most important of which is the amount of time they are aged on laths to bring out all the subtle aromas of the main varietals used, which are the same grapes as used in a traditional Crémant de Bourgogne.
Crémant de Bourgogne is not marketing itself as a cheaper version of Champagne. There is a strong movement in the region to celebrate and promote small production Crémant de Bourgogne and we are proudly part of this revolution!
The best sparkling wines of Burgundy are celebrated as unique expressions of specific vineyards and just like our still wines, our producers are expressing their terroir through their sparkling wines. The bubbles are celebrated but also is the quality of the wine, behind the bubbles.
