Introducing the 2021 vintage. Just as we Burgundy purists begrudgingly acknowledged the vitality and variety of the three previous hot-weather vintages, along came 2021, classic Burgundy with its frost, damp and low yields. First came devastating frosts in the early part of April, which were followed by a cool May, leading to a damp summer with the ever-present threat of hail. Fewer grapes on the vine means that those which have survived should have an intensity of flavor which sets them apart and may mark this harvest out as extraordinary.

Yields were low and so is our allocation.  Get it while you can, you will not be disappointed. A must have assortment of burgundy favorites for summer entertaining.

Domaine Gilles Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'Murgers des Dents de Chiens' 2021
Gilles has two different parcels in this, the best known of the Saint-Aubin premier crus. One with old vines, situated near the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Garennes’ (which he also makes), and the other near Puligny 1er Cru ‘Folatieres’.  He makes these wine in double-sized barrels, 40% new oak, to tame the tannins. There is a deep, almost Meursault quality to the Dents de Chien, spicy and complex.  Great continuity from attack, through mid-palate and on to a superb finish.

Domaine Germain Pere et Fils Saint Romain Blanc 2021
With admirable yields (45hl/ha), this Saint Romain white is taken seriously right from the start. Add 30% new oak and 8-9 months of aging and batonnage, and you get a very classy Chardonnay with the unique and superbly subtle Saint Romain minerality, full, rich and dense, with elegant floral notes, good acidity in its youthful charm. We found this wine on a restaurant list in Santenay and were so impressed we went the next day and became friends with the producers.

Jean-Jacques Girard Bourgogne Blanc 2021
A baby Savigny white. Its youthful vivacity tempered with a judicious use of oak yields a balance and a maturity beyond its years. That's the hand of the winemaker working with terroir that he was born to.

Domaine Oudin Chablis 2021
Classic sweet river rock minerality and floral freshness, this is a meticulous perfectionists’ Chablis ‘tout-court’ (as the locals call the ‘village’ appellation). This wine is at its peak now and will remain there for another 3-4 years. A lovely introduction to the Domaine Oudin style.

Agnes Paquet Bourgogne Chardonnay 2021
Raised partly in steel with a small percentage of oak, this Chardonnay from strong limestone soils in the Hautes Cotes is crunchy, like biting in to the grape bunch, with fantastic freshness and good acidity on the finish. Mineral and pure.

Jean-Baptiste Ponsot Rully ‘En Bas de Vauvry’ 2011
Stony-dry minerality, smokiness sublimated by a very elegant and creamy toasted aging. Great finesse and tension, a hallmark of Ponsot whites. All the complexity of the premier crus! Aged 12 months in barrels (one-third new oak) and 3 months of assembly in mass (15% of tank, 20% of new barrels and the rest in barrels of 1 to 4 wines).
