Overview

After three successive high-quality but low-quantity vintages, winemakers in Burgundy were able to refill their cellars with an excellent 2022 harvest. This is not to say that it was an easy ride. Once again, frost, heat and drought put stress on the growing season, but timing is everything, and the extreme weather did much less damage than in previous years. 2022 wines, both white and red, are showing real depth and ripeness. And while there was once again very little malic acid, the tartaric acid holds the balance and structure together.

Domaine Gilles Bouton Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'Les Champlots' 2022
We met Gilles Bouton back in the days of our hotel-barge Le Papillon when we were cruising the inland waterways in search of the real Burgundy. I remember the first taste of his Saint-Aubin 1er Cru ‘en Remilly’, thinking we had discovered the best deal in white Burgundy ever. Gilles Bouton took the reins of his maternal grandfather’s 4 hectare (9.6 acre) domain in 1977. The holding now totals 15 hectares (36 acres) and is spread out over four villages (Saint Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault) all prime property in the so-called Golden Triangle of white Burgundy. Gilles was joined by his son, Julien, at the end of 2008. The domain today makes on average 60,000 bottles per year. The Boutons sell most of their wine to private individuals either out-the-door at the domain or at numerous wine salons in France. From a steep south-west facing slope overlooking the village of Gamay, Les Champlots gets the full afternoon sun, and is hence always that bit more exuberant than the ‘En Remilly’ from the other side of the hill. Expressive, floral, and orange-blossom citric, it’s supple and well-balanced, with a smoky mineral in the finish.

Chateau Cary Potet Montagny 1er Cru 'Les Burnins' 2022
From the southern reaches of the Cote Chalonnaise, the wines of Montagny are among the best value in White Burgundy. With a unique and dusty minerality that many compare to a suave left-bank Chablis, the wines also profit from their southern position, so ripeness and maturity yield seductive and charming Chardonnay. This premier cru ‘Les Burnins’ has a mineral attack with orange blossom floral notes and spicy round fruit. Rich and smoky, with green apple acidity and a touch of butter. Good long finish carried by the minerality.

Jean Dauvissat Pere et Fils Chablis 2022
The distinctive minerality of Chalky Chablis immediately suggests that this village-level wine hails from vines on the left bank of the Serein River. Many of Dauvissat's vineyards are located in this area, near Milly, a hamlet at the base of the Cote de Lechet. The wine is marked by deep berry fruit and bright lemon-drop (more like orange) acidity, creating a bold and concentrated profile. On the palate, it unfolds expansively, with a long, rich finish that is driven by its unmistakable minerality.

Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Blanc 2022
This is a real (secret) gem, the vines actually sit within the commune of Puligny-Montrachet and this is evident in the floral and citrus fruit bouquet, surprisingly dense and mineral in the attack. It does not possess all the intensity of a village or 1er cru but no doubt is a perfect example of how, when you understand the sometimes complex Burgundy wine laws, great quality can work in our favour, drinking perfectly now.

Domaine Felix Saint Bris 'Cuvee Sainte Claire' 2022
Cuvée Sainte Claire is a single-parcel, 100% Sauvignon Blanc wine that showcases the terroir’s purity and freshness. The vines—planted in 1962—thrive in rich Portlandian and Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils on a half-hectare slope. Pale gold, with a bouquet of white fruits, white flowers, and a hint of flinty minerality. The palate is lively, vibrant,  fresh, with elegant mineral notes, and a persistent finish. This cuvée is regularly recognized in wine competitions for its precision, balance, and expressive character. Think 'Sancerre'.

Domaine Jean Fery Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc 'La Come des Amoureuses'  2022
In the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, vineyards lie at an average altitude of 300 to 400 meters (100 to 150 meters higher than the Côte vineyards). Good exposition compensates for the influence of altitude. However, it is more exposed to frosts, and grapes ripen later. 80% oak barrels and 20% vats for this Hautes Côtes de Beaune white. A nose of citrus, white-fleshed fruits, followed by a toasted note. The palate is incisive, fresh and invigorating, then generous, rich and complex on the finish.
