Burgundy’s Best Kept Secret: Discovering the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

Long overshadowed by the famous villages of the Côte de Nuits, the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is emerging as one of Burgundy’s most exciting sources of value and quality. Discover how high-altitude vineyards, cooler temperatures, and talented growers like Julien Cruchandeau are producing vibrant, terroir-driven wines that savvy Burgundy lovers are increasingly seeking out.
Whilst most wine drinkers have heard of (and sampled) the legendary wines of the Côte de Nuits, fewer have explored the high-altitude vineyards found to its West. Here, nestled just behind the famous powerhouse villages of Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, lies the appellation of Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. Covering roughly 20 villages, this region is home to many hidden gems and brilliant winemakers. Increasingly, thanks in part to the ever-warming climate, these historically overlooked vines are being seen as more valuable and desirable than ever before.

The Triumph of the High Slopes

Warmer weather, arriving earlier in the year and lasting for longer, means that these higher plots—sitting between 300 and 400 meters above sea level—offer a critical advantage. Their cooler temperatures provide a distinct freshness and vibrant acidity that can now be harder to achieve on the increasingly sun-baked, lower slopes of the main strip.

There are no Grand Crus in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits—at least, not yet. However, Premier and Grand Cru-quality wines are already being crafted here by forward-thinking producers. Winemakers in the region know that it is all too easy to get hung up on famous village labels. Instead, they focus on making their unique limestone terroir sing, staying true to family methods and precise, low-intervention traditions.

The terroirs here are just as rich and diversified as those on the lower Côte d’Or. The vines have triumphantly come through a tricky period a few decades ago when under-ripeness and tough maturation were persistent issues. Today, the conditions are near-perfect, and savvy wine buyers are driving a real surge in demand.

A Storied Past and Bright Future

While the official appellation of Burgundy Hautes-Côtes de Nuits only came into being in 1961, the grapes of this hallowed place have been cultivated for many centuries. Historically, the area was heavily championed by the powerful Abbey of Saint-Vivant and the Dukes of Burgundy, who recognized the quality of these hillsides. Like its neighbor to the south, the region suffered heavily from the devastating phylloxera blight in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which obliterated vast swaths of the vineyards. It took decades of hard work to replant and reclaim these steep, rocky slopes, but the current golden age proves it was well worth the effort.

Tasting the Terroir: Red and White Profiles

White wines from this region, made predominantly from Chardonnay, are capable of a great variety of flavor and aroma. The nose typically reveals white fruits like pear and crisp apple, alongside notes of lemon, white flowers, or fresh honey. On the palate, they deliver an energetic fruitiness balanced by a subtle, chalky minerality. They make excellent aperitif wines and pair beautifully with grilled fish and light seafood dishes.

The red wines, crafted from Pinot Noir, offer a beautiful sensory promise. The nose delivers sweet, vibrant black and red fruit flavors—think fresh raspberry, wild strawberry, and blackcurrant—often accented by elegant hints of violet, licorice, and damp earth. On the palate, they are fresh, mineral-driven, and intensely fruity, supported by fine-grained tannins and a long, energetic finish.

To really understand the dramatic evolution of this region, trying the wines for yourself is the best way. Unsure where to start? One particularly exciting winemaker is leading the charge.

A winemaker that exemplifies the Hautes-Cotes

If you want to experience the absolute pinnacle of what this appellation can achieve, look no further than Julien Cruchandeau. Established in 2003, Domaine Cruchandeau has become an undeniable locomotive and innovator among the new generation of organic Burgundy producers. Cruchandeau is highly regarded for his meticulous, respectful vineyard work and minimal-intervention cellar practices, ensuring that the true voice of the high hills comes through in every bottle.

He produces excellent, vibrant wines across several appellations, but his work in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is where his talent truly shines:
  • Julien Cruchandeau Hautes-Côtes de Nuits ‘Les Valençons’ Rouge: A stunning expression of high-altitude Pinot Noir. It bursts with bright red berries, wild spices, and a precise, refreshing acidity that makes it incredibly food-friendly and approachable while still maintaining great aging potential.
  • Julien Cruchandeau Hautes-Côtes de Nuits ‘Blanc: This exceptional white Chardonnay is born from steep, limestone-heavy soils. It is incredibly crunchy and pure—almost like biting straight into a fresh grape bunch—boasting fantastic tension, citrus energy, and a clean, saline finish.
  • Julian Cruchandeau Bouzeron ‘Massale’Deep, rich and dense with concentrated confit apple acidity, honey and cinnamon spicy. Great body, opulent and fresh.  Classic minerality gives it length and purity. And the complexity…you’d think it’s a chablis premier cru!

The New Frontier of Burgundy

The prestigious Grand Cru names of the Côte de Nuits—like Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny—have already won their races and ascended to their lofty heights. But the real drama, energy, and excitement in Burgundy today is coming from these smaller, lesser-known high hillsides. Driven by passionate winemakers striving for absolute excellence, the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is fully ready to win its own badges of honor. It is going to be absolutely fascinating to watch.
