Domaine Joliet: The Grand Cru That Time Forgot

Some vineyards become famous because of classification. Others become famous because of fashion. And then there are the rare few whose reputation was established centuries before either existed. Domaine Joliet belongs firmly in the third category.

Some vineyards become famous because of classification. Others become famous because of fashion. And then there are the rare few whose reputation was established centuries before either existed.

Domaine Joliet belongs firmly in the third category.

Hidden away in the village of Fixin at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits lies one of Burgundy’s most fascinating estates: the Clos de la Perrière. It is a vineyard with nearly 900 years of history, one family ownership stretching back more than 170 years, and a remarkable claim that many Burgundy lovers believe deserves far more attention than it receives.

If you’ve never tasted Domaine Joliet, you’re missing one of Burgundy’s greatest values.

A Vineyard Born in the Middle Ages

The story begins in 1142, when the Cistercian monks established the Clos de la Perrière. Like so many of Burgundy’s greatest vineyards, they recognized something special about this hillside long before modern geology or vineyard classifications existed. They enclosed it within stone walls, creating a true clos—a single vineyard cultivated as one complete entity.

Unlike many of Burgundy’s famous clos today, Clos de la Perrière has never been fragmented. While vineyards such as Clos de Vougeot have been divided among dozens of owners, Clos de la Perrière remains a true monopole, owned entirely by one family.

The Joliet family purchased the estate in 1853 and today, six generations later, continue to care for the vineyard with the same philosophy of independence, patience and respect for terroir that the monks established centuries earlier.

Why Isn’t It Grand Cru?

It is one of Burgundy’s great mysteries.

In the nineteenth century, the renowned Burgundy authority Dr. Jules Lavalle classified Clos de la Perrière alongside many vineyards that would later become today’s Grand Crus. At the time, its wines were sold at prices comparable to Chambertin.

Yet when the modern AOC classifications were established in the twentieth century, Clos de la Perrière was designated merely as Fixin Premier Cru.

Many observers—including current proprietor Bénigne Joliet—believe this historic vineyard possesses Grand Cru quality. Ironically, that classification has become an advantage for Burgundy drinkers. The wines deliver extraordinary pedigree and complexity without the eye-watering prices attached to nearby Grand Cru names.

In Burgundy, classification and quality usually travel together.

Usually.

Fixin’s Quiet Renaissance

For years, Fixin lived in the shadow of its famous southern neighbour, Gevrey-Chambertin. Many wine drinkers simply overlooked the village (For more information on the appellation, read our blog on Fixin.

That is changing.

Recent international attention—including a feature in The New York Times exploring the remarkable history and revival of Clos de la Perrière—has introduced a new generation of collectors to one of Burgundy’s hidden treasures. What local Burgundy enthusiasts have known for decades is now being discovered around the world: Fixin can produce wines of remarkable finesse, elegance and longevity.

Fortunately, prices have yet to catch up with the reputation.

Precision in the Vineyard

History alone never makes great wine.

The real achievement at Domaine Joliet is what happens today.

The estate farms approximately five hectares within the Clos, with around 4.5 hectares planted to Pinot Noir and a small parcel devoted to Chardonnay. Rather than treating the vineyard as one homogeneous block, each section is harvested and vinified separately before being assembled into the final blend.

Yields are deliberately kept low, ensuring concentration without sacrificing balance. Long élevage in oak allows the wines to gain texture while preserving their freshness and precision. More recent vintages increasingly incorporate whole-cluster fermentation, giving the wines additional aromatic lift, structure and complexity. Organic certification is also underway, reflecting the family’s continued commitment to careful stewardship of this remarkable site.

This is thoughtful, patient winemaking—designed not to impress in youth but to reward over many years.

The Wines

The Fixin Premier Cru Clos de la Perrière Rouge overturns every stereotype of the appellation.

Instead of rusticity, expect elegance.

Bright raspberry, cherry and floral aromas lead into a wine of impressive depth and silky structure. Beneath the fruit lies a mineral backbone that speaks clearly of its limestone soils. There is energy, purity and remarkable persistence, qualities that allow the wine to evolve beautifully for fifteen years or more.

Less well known—but every bit as compelling—is the Clos de la Perrière Blanc.

Produced from just half a hectare of Chardonnay, it combines richness with tension, offering citrus, white flowers, toasted nuts and an unmistakable mineral finish. It has the depth associated with some of Burgundy’s finest white wines while retaining a freshness that makes it irresistible at the table.

Why We Love Domaine Joliet

At burgundywine.com, we’ve long believed that Burgundy’s greatest pleasures often come from looking beyond the obvious names.

Domaine Joliet embodies everything we admire.

A family estate with centuries of history.

A unique monopole preserved intact through generations.

Winemaking that respects tradition while embracing thoughtful evolution.

And perhaps most importantly, wines that consistently deliver far more than their classification suggests.

For collectors, Clos de la Perrière offers authenticity, history and exceptional ageing potential.

For those just beginning their Burgundy journey, it offers something even rarer: the opportunity to discover a truly great vineyard before the rest of the world fully catches on.

Sometimes the smartest bottle isn’t the one everyone is chasing.

Sometimes it’s the one that’s been quietly waiting for nearly nine centuries.
