About Discover Premier Cru Red Case

Premier Cru Red Burgundy represents exceptional Pinot Noir sourced from distinguished vineyard sites ranked just below Grand Cru. Celebrated for their precision, age-worthiness, and clear expression of terroir, these wines often evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, revealing layers of minerality, citrus, subtle oak, and refined complexity. Closed on the nose due to low acidity and volatility. The attack is dense black currant, almost syrupy. Smokey and dark notes, lots of bottom, more typical of a low-acid grape like syrah. Will open, as there are points of acidity. The finish is velour, voluptuous, smoky with low acid, but good tannin carrying the fruit to the end. Domaine Desuremain Chateau de Monthelie 1er Cru 'Sur la Velle' 2020With four different strains of Pinot Noir planted in the same parcel, this south-facing low-yielding premier cru has-- year in, year out-- incredible diversity and breeding. Here we find that black cherry Pinot, with rich extraction, soft tannins and great balance. Great aging potential too. Domaine Jean Féry Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses' Rouge 2021Yes, we admit, it can be complicated! There is this Jean Fery RED Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses', but the domain also makes both a red and a white Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru both called 'Les Vergelesses' as well. To make things even more complicated, the Pernand 'Vergelesses' and the two Savigny 'Vergelesses' touch another Pernand premier cru called 'Ile des Vergelesses'! Sorry! We do our best to keep it all simple and clear. In addition to being the most complicated corner of the Savigny valley, it's also the most interesting. The vines are east-facing, low on the iron-rich slopes. This premier cru Vergelesses is charming and veloute, with freshness in the black fruit aromas. This wine is accessible fairly young. We start to enjoy them at about 3 years. Marchand-Tawse Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Lavieres' 2022‘Les Lavieres’ sits below the ‘Les Vergelesses’ on well-drained lava-like limestone (hence ‘Lavieres’). The wine is Savigny delicate, but generous, with a structure and balance based on fine tannins. Ruby red, ample and suave, this is a Savigny with aging potential and lots of youthful charm. Your choice. Domaine Mouton Givry 1er Cru 'Clos Jus' 2022Domaine Mouton's aptly-named 'Clos Jus' ('jus' means 'juice') is the Mouton wine we go to first. Always ripe and juicy, ready to drink relatively early. Minerality is the key here, from a vineyard with different soil make-up to the rest of the appellation. Dark fruit, earth notes, delicate structure fleshed out to fullness. We appreciate the finesse in the winemaking, an unstinting perfectionism that has been communicated across a generation. The self-effacing Moutons would be the last to admit it, but for us their wines are nearly always perfect. Domaine Royet Maranges 1er Cru 'Clos Roussot' 2022Deep garnet color, fine woody nose with hints of candied cherries. The palate is balanced, gourmand, with a lot of class. Fine example of the new generation of Maranges. Aging potential: 5 to 10 years
