Domaine Germain Père et Fils Saint Romain 'Sous le Château' 2017
This Saint Romain red is from perhaps the best-known vineyard in the appellation: Sous le Château’. And with one taste you will understand its justified reputation. Here’s a Pinot that is startlingly charming in its youth. Fresh, clean and delicious. Round, not a hint of green. Full, juicy fruit explodes with youthful acidity. What a mouthful. And then, there, behind all this immediate pleasure, comes a structure which tells you that you want to save a few bottles of this for the future. But that might be hard to do, given the way it’s drinking today.
Agnes Paquet Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2017
A good percentage of whole grape in the maceration gives this Auxey red a delicate encapsulated burst of cherry fruit. The Auxey terroir and tannic structure on display, and the ensemble is well-structured and juicy in youth.
Domaine Germain Pere et Fils Saint Romain Blanc 2018
With admirable yields (45hl/ha), this Saint Romain white is taken seriously right from the start. Add 30% new oak and 8-9 months of aging and batonnage, and you get a very classy Chardonnay with the unique and superbly subtle Saint Romain minerality, full, rich and dense, with elegant floral notes, good acidity in its youthful charm. We found this wine on a restaurant list in Santenay and were so impressed we went the next day and became friends with the producers. An excellent bottle.
Domaine Jean Fery Bourgogne ‘Les Montatines’ Blanc 2017
Pure deep fruit, rounded with just enough oak to make your mouth water. Floral and citric, but mouth-filling and long.
Capitain Gagnerot Saint Romain 'Au Bas de Poillange' 2018
This parcel of Saint Romain ‘Au Bas de Poillange’ is relatively new to the Maison Capitain, and it has become the pet project of Patrice’s son, Pierre-Francois, who works it with strict organic methods. What’s most interesting is that the Capitains know well the minerality of the Corton Mountain. But this Saint Romain is something all its own. Floral with racy stony freshness. It’s a tiny production of about 3000 bottles a year.
Agnes Paquet Auxey-Duresses Blanc 'Patience No 10' 2018
Agnes uses 350 liter barrels (30% new) for this exceptional Auxey cuvee, which is only made in years that she thinks it propitious. The wine spends 12 months in the wood, then 4 months in steel to sharpen the focus. This is a serious food wine, voluptuous and rich, with deep fruit and great structure. Drinks way above its appellation!
