Overview

Our Premier Cru case highlights some of the very best hidden gem wines that Elden Selections has found throughout our years of cultivating relationships with small-production Burgundy wine domains. One mere step below the hailed Grand Cru AOC, 1er Cru vineyards represent some of the very best Burgundy has to offer, and Elden Selections also goes the distance to find some of the very best in value as well. Enjoy this mixed case, representative of several different types of terroir, production style, and vintage variation among these crown jewels of Burgundian 1er Cru.

Jean Dauvissat Pere et Fils Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaillons’ 2016
This Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaillons’ is remarkable for its limpidity; it catches light and reflects it like a jewel. Vigorous and full, this is a big wine with fat decadent spicy fruit and deep lingering minerality. Balanced and precise from the attack, through the mid-palate to the long finish, this is a very well-made wine.

Gilles Bouton Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'En Remilly' 2018
‘En Remilly’ is arguably the best of the Saint Aubin premier cru vineyards.  It falls from a steep, south-facing hillside which is an extension of the Grand Cru ‘Le Montrachet’ as the slopes follow the valley.  The soil make-up (if you can even call it soil!) is pretty much crushed gravel, making for one of the most mineral whites in the zone.  Floral, flinty and citric, it’s one of the great discoveries in white Burgundy.

Capitain Gagnerot Ladoix 1er Cru 'Les Gréchons et Foutrières' 2018
The Capitain Ladoix 1er Cru Grechons is very much an insider's wine. It's sold almost exclusively in the region (or to those who know Capitain well). Year upon year we have tasted the new Grechons at the same time that we taste the latest Capitain Corton Charlemagne, often standing in the freezing cold when the barrels have been taken outside to cold-precipitate the tartaric acids. The number of times we have mistaken the Grechons for the Charlemagne cannot be just chance! There is a similarity in the minerality, with that Corton Mountain limestone smokiness unlain with honey and white flowers.

Domaine De Suremain Rully 1er Cru 'Preaux' 2015
Very pretty Pinot Noir from the charming 2015 vintage. This premier cru Rully from the Cote Chalonnaise throws out a range of complexity from red currant acidity to black cherry suavity. A touch of rusticity in the tannins brings out a freshness and vivacity that makes this wine approachable now, and that will make it magnificent in 4-5 years’ time.

Domaine Albert Boillet Pommard 1er Cru 'En Largilliere' 2016
Situated above the ‘Grands Epenots’, ‘En Largilliers’ is a relatively unknown premier cru. It sits between ‘Charmots’ and Pezerolles’, and just below ‘Noizons’, so it has pedigree! As its name implies, it has a high content of clay, meaning that it produces deep, tight, earthy wines. The 2016 is expressive, with superlative round fruit that engulfs the palate, with just a touch of earth and smoke so you know it's a Pommard. Deep, long finish. A wine you can enjoy now, but which will reward any patience you might have.

Domaine Jean Fery Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses' Rouge 2017
Yes, we admit, it can be complicated! There is this Jean Fery RED Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 'Les Vergelesses', but the domain also makes both a red and a white Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru both called 'Les Vergelesses' as well. To make things even more complicated, the Pernand 'Vergelesses' and the two Savigny 'Vergelesses' touch another Pernand premier cru called 'Ile des Vergelesses'! Sorry! We do our best to keep it all simple and clear. In addition to being the most complicated corner of the Savigny valley, it's also the most interesting. The vines are east-facing, low on the iron-rich slopes. This premier cru Vergelesses is charming and veloute, with freshness in the black fruit aromas. This wine is accessible fairly young. We start to enjoy them at about 3 years.
