Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Peuillets' 2018
One thing is certain, Jean-Jacques Girard knows Savigny les Beaune Every angled hillside, every rivulet, every cut in the rock, where the sun shines and where the dew settles. Me makes several different Savignys and a horizontal tasting in Jean-Jacques' cellars is a master class in the appellation. This Savigny-les Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Peuillets' is supple and lacy, with spicy almost explosive black and red currant fruit. There's an intensity that makes the young fruit charming, but which really shows the structure for aging.
Beaune 1er Cru 'Clos du Roi' 2018
Beaune 1er Cru 'Clos du Roi' is, as the name suggests, one of the best parcels in the hills above Beaune. Beaunes can have the spice of Savigny, so the style plays well into Jean-Jacques Girard's hands, but the Clos du Roi has the oomph of the Corton mountain. Red fruit ans spice, great building intensity, round, fleshy and persistent, It's a fist in a velvet glove.
Aloxe-Corton 2018
With this Aloxe Corton, Jean-Jacques comes roaring out of his home valley of Savigny les Beaune. Where his Savigny is floral, spicy and elegant up front, the first nose of this Aloxe Corton is powerful, animal. Then it's a mouthful of black fruit, with the elegance rolling in on the mid-palate and sticking around for the finish and the reflection. This is another register for Jean-Jacques Girard, who, you will find, has perfect pitch!
Savigny les Beaune Red 2018
Jean-Jacques Girard's Village appellation Savigny-les Beaune, is aged for 15 months in oak. But you would never believe it to taste it! Granted, the color is deep cherry red, as are the fruits, but this Savigny is supple, graceful, full of finesse with an enjoyable palette of fruit bouncing around the mid-palate and ending on freshness. If you want a snapshot of what Pinot Noir does in the Savigny valley, here's your wine.
