Overview

CÔTE CHALONNAISE
Boundaries exist for many reasons. They can delimit regions that are older than memory, or simply be expedient lines drawn on a map. History and geography, but also politics and favoritism, create boundaries. Wine regions are no different. As you head south out of Beaune you are forced, almost without knowing it, to choose one of two roads that flank the hills around the castle at La Rochepot. People who built such strongholds knew what they were doing. They chose strategic sites in areas of passage, frontiers. And it’s not far from here that the Côte de Beaune abruptly ends and the Côte Chalonnaise begins.

Though the soils remain much the same and the slopes have similar exposures to the sun, here we lose the continuity of the Côte de Beaune, the hillside drops away. The wines of the Côte Chalonnaise are produced in and around five distinct villages separated one from the other by agriculture other than vines. And each of these discreet outcrops produces a style apart.

RED WINES
Domaine Mouton Givry 1er Cru 'Clos Jus' 2022
Domaine Mouton's aptly-named 'Clos Jus' ('jus' means 'juice') is the Mouton wine we go to first. Always ripe and juicy, ready to drink relatively early. Minerality is the key here, from a vineyard with different soil make-up to the rest of the appellation. Dark fruit, earth notes, delicate structure fleshed out to fullness. We appreciate the finesse in the winemaking, an unstinting perfectionism that has been communicated across a generation. The self-effacing Moutons would be the last to admit it, but for us their wines are nearly always perfect.

Domaine De Suremain Rully 1er Cru 'Preaux' 2020
Very pretty Pinot Noir from the charming 2015 vintage. This premier cru Rully from the Cote Chalonnaise throws out a range of complexity from red currant acidity to black cherry suavity. A touch of rusticity in the tannins brings out a freshness and vivacity that makes this wine approachable now, and that will make it magnificent in 4-5 years’ time.

Domaine Jean Marechal Mercurey Vieilles Vignes 2020
Assembled from three separate parcels in appellation Mercurey.  Open and juicy cherry fruit, a little touch of leather in its backbone.  Balanced fruit and acid, mouthwatering and fresh. Lovely long finish all in fruit.

WHITE WINES
Chateau Cary Potet Montagny 1er Cru 'Les Burnins' 2022

From the southern reaches of the Cote Chalonnaise, the wines of Montagny are among the best value in White Burgundy. With a unique and dusty minerality that many compare to a suave left-bank Chablis, the wines also profit from their southern position, so ripeness and maturity yield seductive and charming Chardonnay. This premier cru ‘Les Burnins’ has a mineral attack with orange blossom floral notes and spicy round fruit. Rich and smoky, with green apple acidity and a touch of butter. Good long finish carried by the minerality.

Jean-Baptiste Ponsot Rully 1er Cru ‘Molesme’ 2021
Excellent structure, verging on the side of an acidity that carries the minerality and floral notes uniformly across the length and breadth of the palate. Beautiful marriage between the fat of the wine and the mineral tension. Round, precise and gourmand. Aging 12 months in barrels (25% of new oak barrels) and 3 months of assembly in mass.

Jean-Baptiste Ponsot Rully 1er Cru ‘Montpalais’ 2022
Gun-flint smoky minerality drives this ripe, old-vine fruit and elegant white flower complexity to great lengths. Extremely long finish, and the hallmark tension, even in old vine depth. Aging 12 months in barrels (20% of new oak barrels) and 3 months of assembly in mass.
