RED WINES
Domaine Michel Arcelain Bourgogne 2019
The grapes for this Bourgogne all come from the commune of Pommard, the climat of ‘Les Lormes’, ’Seurets’ and ‘Crenilles’. Hand harvested and 100% de-stemmed. The wine is matured in oak barrels for 22 months, however no new oak is used in order to protect the fruit profile freshness. Its aromas are red fruit, soft tannin with some hints of tertiary notes of underwood and spices. The palate is cranberries with a background of cassis, white pepper, rose, tea leaf tannin and bright minerality. The finish is long, lingering and balanced. A great introduction that demands more exploration of the producer. The domaine is committed to a reasoned culture from vines to wines. The philosophy is also to use traditional and modern methods to produce a wine as natural as possible. The wines of Domaine Arcelain are timeless classics, never brash, they do drink well young however hidden within these powerfully subtle wines there is an immense ability to age and improve.

Domaine Jean Fery Morey St Denis 2019
Morey St Denis is an epicenter. With five Grand Cru and twenty 1er Cru parcels, this is some of the prime real estate in Burgundy. There is hardly an iffy vineyard in the village. And these are some of the most refined wines of the Cotes de Nuits. This village AOC from Domaine Jean Fery has black fruits that impose themselves, sweet and round, in a structure that is typical Morey minerality, with a freshness bred of fine tannins and good balance.

Domaine Marchand Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 'Vieilles Vignes' 2019
‘Vieilles Vignes’, old vines, have the advantage of keeping crop yields naturally low. And low crop yields mean ‘concentration’. Here we get that concentration in a Gevrey-Chambertin ‘village’ made from two contiguous ‘lieux dits’ (Pressonniers and Fourneaux) which are situated below the line of the Grand Cru to the west of the Combe Lavaux. We are talking about a classic Gevrey village spot, similar to the vineyard ‘Aux Etelois’ that is just across the way. This is Gevrey-Chambertin as we like it best.

Domaine Pierre Naigeon Marsannay 'Sampagny' 2019
And allow me to end with the biggest surprise of the day. Pierre's Marsannay 'Sampagny' proves the adage that to understand Marsannay you need to know the vineyards. There is such diversity in the soil types in Marsannay. But here, in this single-vineyard 'Sampagny' you get a delicate cover to a magnificently complex wine, graceful and yet full of energy and tension. A great example of what Marsannay can be.

Domaine Pierre Thibert Chorey Les Beaune 2019
Pierre Thibert is a ‘garagiste’ no more!  And we’re here to report on big changes in this small-production, top-quality, self-made domain.  Pierre and his wife, Aline, have accomplished what many say is no longer possible in Burgundy: they built a solid family domain, a world-class reputation and a sophisticated style over the course of a single generation. They created something out of nothing! Delicate and supple, rich and full of Pinot Noir character. Crimson with classic red and black fruits set off by earth and spice. Good and subtle tannic structure finishing long on fruit.

Domaine Thierry Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 2019
If you thought the ‘assemblage’ of the Mortet Bourgogne Rouge brought lots of different Pinot Noir strains to the cellar, get this: this Gevrey-Chambertin village is made from grapes from 20 different parcels of vines in AOC Gevrey-Chambertin! It would be hard to find a more representative example of Gevrey village’s famous diversity. Pure and open, intense blackberry and black currant, a touch of licorice. You’ll want to try it now, but keep it a few years more and you’ll be rewarded.

WHITE WINES
Jean Dauvissat Pere et Fils Chablis 1er Cru ‘Cote de Lechet’ 2019
A classic Cote de Lechet, about as mineral as Chablis can be. This premier cru Cote de Lechet is a model of Left Bank precision, razor sharp, with juicy, mouth-watering acidity. A characteristic floral attack and gun-flint smokiness fill the mid-palate, and the finish is bright berry fruit and long, long minerality.

Domaine Jean Fery Pernand-Vergelesses 'Les Combottes' 2019
Pernand 'Les Combottes' lies in a heat trap above and behind the village of Pernand-Vergelesses. In a sense it is the last vineyard in the line leading off of Corton-Charlemagne, which explains why you often see this village appellation bottled as a single vineyard lieu-dit. The Domaine Jean Fery has its roots in Echevronne, just above the village of Pernand-Vergelesses, so this is, in a sense, their signature white. Floral and mineral, uniquely Pernand, there's a freshness and a purity that is fleshy and fruity but well-cut and firm.

Château de Vergisson Pouilly-Fuisse ‘Sur la Roche’ 2019
These are vines from Pierre’s end of the valley, on the slopes of the Vergisson outcrop. The vines, almost 100 years old, were planted by Pierre’s great-grandfather. And old vines on a parcel like ‘Sur la Roche’ gives a depth and concentration that is hard to believe. Elegance, tension, freshness, notes of oysters and the sea, iodine.  And of course the minerality carries the finish on forever. Outstanding.
