Mazis-Chambertin

Mazis-Chambertin, adjacent to the great Chambertin itself, is one of Gevrey’s most powerful and long-lived Grands Crus. Its Pinot Noir wines are intense and structured, revealing dark fruit, smoke, and gamey nuances even in youth. The name “Mazis” derives from ancient stone huts once scattered across the vineyard, reflecting its rustic origins. Over time, the robust tannins soften, unveiling profound depth and complexity. Aromas of black cherry, earth, and spice evolve into leather and truffle with maturity. Mazis-Chambertin embodies the essence of Gevrey-Chambertin: strength, depth, and the ability to age gracefully for decades.

Interestingly, this Grand Cru is sometimes labeled “Mazy-Chambertin” or “Mazys-Chambertin,” an older local spelling preserved by several domaines. Both forms refer to the same vineyard—the official INAO designation is Mazis-Chambertin—and the variation is a charming reminder of Burgundy’s layered history, where tradition and individuality are as deeply rooted as the vines themselves.

White Wines

White wines from Mazis-Chambertin are exceedingly rare and unconventional, as the appellation is legally designated for Pinot Noir. However, in exceptional cases where small plantings of Chardonnay exist, they yield wines of impressive character. These whites show a deep, mineral-driven structure with aromas of pear, hazelnut, and citrus zest, supported by a firm acidity that mirrors the power of the reds. Barrel aging can impart subtle toast and spice, balancing the richness of the fruit with precision and length. While not recognized under the Mazis-Chambertin AOC, such experimental whites embody the terroir’s energy—broad-shouldered, vibrant, and unmistakably Burgundian in their complexity and tension.

Red Wines

Mazis-Chambertin produces some of the most muscular and age-worthy red wines in all of Burgundy. Crafted from Pinot Noir, these Grands Crus show remarkable depth and concentration, often revealing dark cherry, blackberry, and plum layered with notes of spice, smoke, and wild game. The vineyard’s stony marl and limestone soils lend a firm backbone and mineral tension that support long aging. With time, the wines gain extraordinary complexity—developing aromas of truffle, leather, and forest floor while retaining their signature intensity. Powerful yet precise, Mazis-Chambertin reds capture the bold, untamed spirit of Gevrey-Chambertin and are revered by collectors for their balance between raw strength and refined elegance.
