Mazis-Chambertin, adjacent to the great Chambertin itself, is one of Gevrey’s most powerful and long-lived Grands Crus. Its Pinot Noir wines are intense and structured, revealing dark fruit, smoke, and gamey nuances even in youth. The name “Mazis” derives from ancient stone huts once scattered across the vineyard, reflecting its rustic origins. Over time, the robust tannins soften, unveiling profound depth and complexity. Aromas of black cherry, earth, and spice evolve into leather and truffle with maturity. Mazis-Chambertin embodies the essence of Gevrey-Chambertin: strength, depth, and the ability to age gracefully for decades.
Interestingly, this Grand Cru is sometimes labeled “Mazy-Chambertin” or “Mazys-Chambertin,” an older local spelling preserved by several domaines. Both forms refer to the same vineyard—the official INAO designation is Mazis-Chambertin—and the variation is a charming reminder of Burgundy’s layered history, where tradition and individuality are as deeply rooted as the vines themselves.
