Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most historic and emblematic vineyards, enclosed by ancient stone walls dating back to the 12th century when it was cultivated by Cistercian monks. Today, more than 80 growers share this 50-hectare Grand Cru in the commune of Vougeot. The wines—exclusively Pinot Noir—vary with parcel and producer but typically show depth, earthiness, and robust tannins. Aromas of dark cherry, plum, and spice evolve into truffle and leather with age. Clos de Vougeot embodies the complexity of Burgundy itself: a single vineyard with multiple expressions, shaped by soil, aspect, and the hand of each vigneron. Properly cellared, it yields a noble, age-worthy wine of great distinction.

White Wines

While Clos de Vougeot is officially restricted to red wines under the AOC, a few rare and experimental white wines have been produced in the surrounding area. Made from Chardonnay grown on similar limestone soils, these wines offer precision, minerality, and a refined sense of place. Aromas of pear, lemon, and white blossom meet subtle hints of toast and hazelnut from oak aging. The palate is vibrant and finely textured, combining freshness with quiet power. Though not recognized under the Clos de Vougeot designation, such whites pay homage to the vineyard’s storied terroir—an imaginative interpretation of one of Burgundy’s most hallowed crus.

Red Wines

Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most historic and emblematic Grand Crus, producing Pinot Noir of depth, structure, and complexity. Enclosed by medieval stone walls, the vineyard’s 50 hectares encompass diverse soils and aspects, resulting in variations in style among producers. At their best, the wines combine the richness of ripe black cherry and plum with earthy undertones of truffle, spice, and forest floor. The palate is firm and layered, supported by ample tannins that mellow beautifully with age. Young Clos de Vougeot can be austere, but with patience, it reveals remarkable elegance and harmony. It is a wine of nobility and tradition, expressing the very soul of the Côte de Nuits.
