Burgundy Winemakers: Spotlight on Domaine Marchand-Freres

Let burgundywine.com show you fantastic hidden-gem Burgundy wine appellations from quality Burgundy winemakers like Domaine Marchand-Freres

There are not many Burgundy winemakers who embody the region’s timeless elegance and meticulous craft in the way that Domaine Marchand Frères does- one of the winemakers we stock here at burgundywine.com. Their roots stretch as far back as 1813, and with a legacy carried through seven generations, this family-run domaine is a testament to the enduring power of tradition, passion, and terroir-driven winemaking.

A History in the Heart of the Côte de Nuits

The story of their journey in Burgundy wine began in the early 19th century when Pierre Marchand established the estate through marriage into the Morey-Saint-Denis winemaking community. More than two centuries later, the domaine remains a family enterprise.

For most of its history, the domaine was centered in Morey-Saint-Denis, but a pivotal change came in 1983 when Marchand Frères acquired an 18th-century winegrower’s house in the centre of Gevrey-Chambertin. This elegant property, with its historic cellars, gradually became the estate’s operational heart, and today winemaker Denis Marchand lives and welcomes guests here, continuing the family’s heritage with his brother Jean-Philippe’s support.

Terroir and Vineyards: Burgundy’s Quintessence

Occupying around 8 to 8.5 hectares of prime Côte de Nuits land, Domaine Marchand Frères’ holdings are spread across some of the most celebrated villages in Burgundy: Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Gevrey-Chambertin.

These vineyards sit on classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils, vital for the depth and complexity that define these wines. Many parcels are planted with old vines (30–60+ years old), which produce lower yields but contribute concentrated, expressive fruit.

Like an increasing number of Burgundy winemakers, the domaine practices sustainable viticulture, spacing out treatments and turning to natural methods when appropriate — a reflection of a broader commitment to the health of the vines and the land they call home.

Best Hidden Gem Marchand Frères Wines on BurgundyWine.com

One of Marchand Frères’ hallmarks is the breadth of appellations it works in— from regional Bourgogne wines to some of Burgundy’s most revered climats.

Regional and Village Wines

    • Bourgogne Rouge & Bourgogne Pinot Noir – approachable yet refined expressions of classic Burgundy fruit, such as this Bourgogne Cote dÓr Rouge Cuvee Eline, which fools you at first: nowadays this producer is thought of as being based in Gevrey-Chambertin, but this wine tastes like a Morey Saint-Denis, where they originally called home.
    • Village Bottlings – Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny village wines, often from old vines, combine beauty and precision. We recommend their Chambolle-Musigny ‘Vieilles Vignes’, with a solid structure but with delicate violet tones too; or this Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Vieilles Vignes’: “Vieilles vignes,” or old vines, naturally produce lower yields, and it is this restriction that brings depth and concentration to the wine. That intensity is clearly expressed in this Gevrey-Chambertin village cuvée, drawn from two adjoining plots—Pressonniers and Fourneaux—located just below the Grand Cru belt, west of the Combe Lavaux. This is prime Gevrey village territory, comparable to the neighbouring Aux Etelois vineyard across the way. It is Gevrey-Chambertin at its most authentic and compelling.

Premier Cru Stars

For enthusiasts seeking greater depth, the domaine’s Premier Cru wines are not to be missed, as they offer nuanced expressions of depth, spice, and intensity:

    • Take the Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru ‘Faconnieres’, for example. This is one of the best-placed of the numerous Premier Crus in this appellation. From vines more than half a century old, they produce just over 1,000 bottles each year – a real triumph of quality over quantity.

Grand Cru Greats

At the peak of the domaine’s portfolio are their Grand Cru vineyards — the highest classification used by Burgundy winemakers:

    • Clos de la Roche – powerful yet graceful, showing the structured elegance of Morey’s finest soils. We used to stock the 2022 version of this, but it won’t surprise anyone to know that it is now sold out..!
    • Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin – from legendary Gevrey terroirs, these wines are rare treasures reflecting both power and aromatic purity. The Marchand-Freres Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very fruity character stuffed full of dense and dark fruits. There is new oak, too, and it is very well supported from ‘underneath’ – this wine has a lot going on in the glass.

Burgundy Wine Philosophy: Precision, Patience, and Purity

Throughout the Marchand Frères range of wines, there is a clear, consistent winemaking philosophy, rooted in respect for fruit, terroir and tradition. It includes:

    • Manual Harvesting: Hand-picking of carefully-selected grapes in the vineyard ensures only the best fruit is chosen.
    • Destemming: Before fermentation the stems are removed, to avoid harsh tannins and preserves purity of flavour.
    • Fermentation & Ageing: Red wines undergo long fermentations, with malolactic conversion and ageing in oak barrels of varying ages tailored to each cuvée. White wines, such as the rare Morey-Saint-Denis Blanc “Le Très Girard,” see some barrel fermentation to add weight and complexity.
    • Light Filtration: A gentle approach ensures the wines maintain their character while still presenting clean, elegant profiles.

This hands-on approach results in wines that are expressive of their origins — precisely balanced, vibrantly fruity, and capable of aging gracefully.

The Marchand Frères Identity: Elegant, Balanced, and True to Place

You find in Domaine Marchand Frères the very essence of what makes Burgundy so revered: deep respect for tradition, a passion for terroir, and a relentless focus on quality over quantity. Production is deliberately small — a few hundred cases of each Premier Cru and Grand Cru cuvée — ensuring that every bottle conveys a unique sense of place and personality.

Whether enjoyed young for its expressive fruit or cellared for future enjoyment, we hope you’ll agree that the wines of Domaine Marchand Frères bring the soul of the region to life.
