If you haven't noticed, we have become big-time cheerleaders for the Domaine Jean Fery over the past few years. We were among the first to bring these wines to the US. And it's now dawning on us just how great they are. Top flight wines from the simplest regional appellations right up into the stratospheric grand cru.
As I have been looking through the Elden US cellars these past few weeks, I have discovered some gems. Older vintages that are drinking well or are just bursting open. And that what I have for you today. Domaine Jean Fery 2016 and a few dynamite reds.
2016: this is one of the most balanced vintages in years. It has that rarest of qualities: both fruit and phenolic maturity. This is the definition of a great vintage. And you can't make it happen. Nature gives it to you. Fruit maturity, you can control. But phenolic maturity (the ripening of the stems, pips and skins) develops separately. Usually, if you wait for the phenolics to develop, the fruit will be overripe, alcohol levels rise, and you end up with a heavy-handed lack-of-finesse. But in those rare years where both come to maturity at the same time, well, that's perfection.
So you absolutely have to taste these Domaine Jean Fery biodynamic masterpieces in the 2016 vintage
Here's a 12 bottle mixed case of 3 different and, may I add, remarkable reds, 4 bottles of each PLUS GROUND SHIPPING INCLUDED:
Morey Saint Denis 2016
These are some of the most refined wines of the Cotes de Nuits. This village AOC from Domaine Jean Fery has black fruits that impose themselves, sweet and round, in a structure that is typical Morey minerality, with a freshness bred of fine tannins and good balance.
Vosne-Romanee 'Aux Reas' 2016
For many, Vosne Romanee makes the ultimate in Pinot Noir. This wonderful 2016 Jean Fery single-vineyard Vosne-Romanee 'Aux Reas' is a beautiful garnat that exudes fruit as intense as its color and flavors as deep and dense as the ensemble suggests, firm and fresh and long. A great vintage and a great wine. 'Harmony' is a word that springs to mind.
Vougeot 1er Cru 'Les Cras' 2016
Vougeot is best known, of course, for the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot. But Vougeot also has four 1er Cru climats as well, making 'insider' wines, with 'Les Cras' the best situated. Earthy and stony with complexity and nuance, deep and powerful and at the same time floral. This is better than many parcels in the Clos de Vougeot itself. And this 2016 is masterful.
